Rustenburg is one of the largest producers of platinum in the world. According to the current news, Amplats (Anglo American Platinum) has stopped all its Rustenburg operations because of the threats of violence that happen to its employees. Pranill Ramchander, spokesperson of the company said that five mines have been affected namely Thembelani, Khomanani, Khuseseleka, Bathopele, and Siphumelele. News about Rustenburg says that ANC North West has shifted its PGC or provincial general council on Sunday to Rustenburg. This news comes just 2 days after party’s nominations deadline for elective conference. According to Supra Mahumapelo, Provincial chairman, the conference would begin around 3pm. The region was earlier thinking of holding the conference on Friday at Kosmos Hall situated in Hartbeespoort.
But proceedings got delayed due to verification issues; as a result of which, parallel conference was being help at Mafikeng. This conference was organized by Kabelo Mataboge, provincial secretary also supporting Kgalema Motlanthe, Deputy President Nomination. The Hartbeesport conference has been endorsed as the African National Congress’ NEC (national executive committee). Green light was given to Delegates for starting to register on Saturday, but once again, conference got delayed while national executive committee and provincial executive committee held talks on trying to resolve parallel conference problem. At the meeting it was decided that 2 factions will be together and would hold 1 PGC at new place in Rustenburg.
The actual deadline to hold nominations for all provinces was Friday. Western Cape and Limpopo, 2 other ANC provinces have failed in holding PGCs. Jackson Mthembu, ANC spokesman said that meeting of party’s national working committee had been scheduled on Sunday for discussing issues with nomination conferences. On Monday, NEC would hold a meeting.

An unforgettable Afcon (Africa Cup of Nations) for 2013 has been promised by Rustenburg Municipality. This is because Rustenburg wants to repeat history by being voted as the best 2010 FIFA World Cup host. Now, this place is going to host matches throughout the tournament as well as be Group D’s base camp which is also regarded as group of death including Tunisia, Algeria, Togo, and Ivory Coast. Micheal Mhlungu, acting mayor said that the city has pledged to provide a memorable tournament just as the city did during the 2010 FIFA world cup.
During the LOC (Afcon Local Organizing Committee), Mhlungu addressed the reporters. On Wednesday, he visited North West province to see the readiness of the state for the coming tournament. He inspected the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, situated in Phokeng having a capacity of 42,000. He also inspected the hotels, venues as well as other supporting tournament locations. A few concerns have been raised by the team regarding Olympia and Mogwase Park Stadium with municipality and they have got an assurance saying that their concerns will be sorted out soon. New service providers will also be available at concerned places for helping in maintenance of the venues so as to make them look standard.
